Continuous Learning Points

Background

In Sep 2003, the USD (AT&L) established a continuous learning policy for Defense Acquisition Workforce members. This continuous learning policy requires members of the acquisition workforce to earn 80 Continuous Learning Points (CLPs) every two years with the goal of achieving 40 CLPs per 12 month period.

Recommended Continuous Learning Points

Per DoD Instruction 5000.66, Defense Acquisition Workforce members must acquire 80 continuous learning points (CLPs) every two years from the date of entry into the acquisition workforce for as long as the member remains in an acquisition position. Defense Acquisition Workforce members are encouraged to set a goal of achieving 40 CLPs within any 12-month period. More information on the continuous learning policy can be viewed at www.dau.edu/training/clc.

The Adobe Acrobat document available below identifies the recommended number of CLPs to be credited for each respective DSCU course. Per the continuous learning guidelines, CLPs are credited at the rate of one CLP per hour of instruction for both resident and onsite courses. Hours of instruction are based on the respective course syllabus as posted in the DSCU course catalog. For online courses with a learning assessment, CLPs are credited at the rate of one CLP per hour of on online learning. The expected average hours required to complete DSCU online courses are also identified in the DSCU course catalog information. For the online learning guides which do not include a learning assessment, CLPs are credited at the rate of 0.5 CLP per hour of online learning. The expected average hours required to complete DSCU learning guides are also identified in the DSCU course catalog information.

Each military department has a system in place for tracking CLPs earned by their workforce members. Additionally, the Director, Acquisition Career Management (DCAM) for the 4th Estate (all other DoD agencies) has a system in place to support these other DoD organizations.

CLPs earned by completing DSCU courses are NOT automatically recorded in the CLP tracking systems. Students that desire to update their CLP values based on successful completion of DSCU courses should follow the guidance and links at www.dau.edu/training/clc.

Note: Per DoD Instruction 1300.26, DOD Financial Management workforce members are required to participate in the DoD Financial Management Certification Program. The FM workforce includes DoD military and civilian personnel who perform FM work and are assigned to FM positions. Designated personnel must complete the requisite quantity of Continuing Education and Training (CET) hours every 2 years to sustain the achieved certification level. For personnel designated as both Defense Acquisition Workforce and DOD Financial Management workforce, CLPs will count as CETs on a unit-for-unit basis. More information about the DoD Financial Management Certification Program can be found at fmonline.ousdc.osd.mil (CAC restricted).
